Today, 6 May, all participating schools arrived at Halil Vedat Firatli Ilkogretim Okulu at 9am and were greeted with a welcome speech by the headteacher Temel Gulenc. He welcomed all the children and the teachers and gave a background to the school. This was followed by a video of the history about the school.

We and our colleagues from Crowland Primary school have checked in and are waiting in the departure lounge. Our flight, Easyjet EZY2383 is due to take off 9.55am. All the children are extremely excited
and are looking forward to the flight.

The group met at the school at 6am and we drove to Luton airport. Arrived at the airport just before 7am.

Video Conference 29 April 2009

On Wednesday 29 April three participating schools took part in a video conference. The two UK schools, South Harringay Junior School and Crowland Primary School linked with Nydala barn och ungdom school in Malmo, Sweden. The video conference allowed the students and teachers to introduce themselves and gave them an opportunity to talk about their projects.

This was a very exciting time for the 8 to 11 year olds students, as it was their first video conferencing experience and allowed them to introduce themselves to other school.

The video conference lasted for about 20 minutes.

The first phase of the project

From 9 to 13 February 2009, Halil Vedat Firath Iklogretim Okulu, an Istanbul school visited South Harringay Junior School and Crowland Primary School. This was the first stage of a partnership between the schools to look at each other’s school environment in preventing bullying and other acts of violence.

During their visit to the Haringey Schools, the Turkish teachers were given a tour of the schools and a visit to number of classrooms. They met each school’s Head teacher, the senior leadership team and class room teachers.

Multilateral partnerships

Multilateral partnerships are cross-curricular projects that involve at least three schools or colleges from at least three European countries. They enable staff and students in the UK to work together with partners in other Comenius eligible countries for the duration of the two year partnership.

Who are they for?

Staff and students in nursery, primary, secondary, special schools, sixth form and further education colleges are eligible. Find out which countries you can work with.

What are the benefits?

In addition to learning more about other cultures and gaining an insight into other teaching practices, participating staff have reported increased enthusiasm and motivation from colleagues and children alike, often resulting in raised standards across the curriculum.

The benefits to the school include valuable opportunities for staff and students to work together, develop focused approaches to problem-solving, and build pedagogical programmes. Pupils and students also have the possibility of visiting their partner institutions through the funding available.

The partnerships can provide a great opportunity for in-service training, through mobility activities such as teacher exchanges, head teacher study visits, teacher placements and project meetings.

South European Safer Schools Partnership

South Harringay Junior School; is excited to be working in partnership with four other schools in the Comenius funded, European Safer Schools Partnership (ESSP).

The aim is to work together to change our school environment to prevent bullying and other acts of violence. This will create more peaceful schools.

The other schools working in partnership with South Harringay Junior School are:

What is the ESSP project?

The project will consider the impact of the physical school environment upon the behaviour of our children. It will consider the environment and use of the external areas and how their design can cause a reduction in violence and conflict.

The partnership will involve all children, staff and parents in a consultation process for the design of play areas at school. This development will lead to the creation of a more peaceful school – European Charter for Democratic schools without Violence – Theme 1.

The ESSP projects aims are based on the European Charter for Democratic Schools without Violence, July 2006.

The Charter has seven themes: –

• The right to a safe, secure and peaceful school
• The right to equal treatment and respect regardless of any personal difference
• To ensure that everyone in the school community is aware of their rights and responsibilities
• Every school has a democratically elected decision making body
• Every school has staff trained to prevent and solve conflicts
• Every case of violence is investigated and dealt with promptly
• Co-operation and exchange of information with local partners to facilitate preventing and solving problems.

How will the project work?

Staff from the schools will visit schools in the partnership to share knowledge, ideas and experience on improving their school environments.

A planning meeting was held in Bordeaux between the 1st and 3rd December 2008 and dates and venues for other meetings have now been agreed.
